Cloning Pros and Cons essays

Cloning Pros and Cons essays Cloning: The production of genetic copies. Clones: A group of genetically identical organisms. Ever since the belief that cloning was a possibility, and especially since it has been developed, it has been a major conflict in the ethical world of values. There are many different pros and cons about the subject, and for a majority, deciding what is right and wrong regarding this issue is virtually impossible. A clone is an organism, or group of organisms, derived from another organism in a nonsexual way. Each cloned organism, or group of organisms, is composed with the exact genetic material as the original organism(s). Genetic material is made up of genes, the parts of a cell that determine characteristics in living things, (worldbook.com). Three strong pros that are commonly used in the great debate over cloning include: Cloning is a technology that would allow infertile couples to have a genetically related child., Cloned human embryonic stem cells have the potential to cure, or assist in the discovery of a cure, for just about any disease or disorder you can imagine, not to mention save diminishing species of animals., and also, Human cloning is not inherently wrong, immoral or evil, the negative association that the public has with cloning is simply a misconception.. On the other hand, there are equally logical arguments about the dark side of cloning. Many people who dont support cloning say that its cons are: Serious health risks are involved., Cloning could, someday, be used for warfare or slavery., and finally, Children whom have been cloned could potentially be looked down upon, or looked up to, causing lack of acceptance and individuality.. Pros: Cloning is a technology that would allow infertile couples to have a genetically related child. For example, in a case where one member of a couple carries a gene for disease, [cloning] u...

Ipod and Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Ipod and Philosophy - Essay Example A family sedan advertised, for instance, would highlight the fun and happy things that families can do with the family sedan. The better the emotional connection made between the potential buyer and the car, the higher the prospects of buyers becoming interested enough to give the car a try. In this case, emotions pique interest and elicit response. Where there is ownership of a vehicle for instance, even a bicycle, then the emotional connection is sometimes intense. People sometimes get buried with their most favorite things, with their bicycles, with their Swiss knives, and with their cell phones. Whether the emotional connection is because of the great utility of the thing, or because of something that is designed into the thing in order to elicit hopefully positive emotional connections, it is clear that the things that people own are not just things that are devoid of emotional context. People buy and keep things on the basis of how they feel about using the things that they buy , is something that is so obvious in the way products and services are marketed, that it is absurd to overlook just how important it is to listen to Don Norman talk about imputing emotional characteristics in to the very design of products. It is clear too, from the work ethic and philosophy of the man, that the ability to elicit an emotional response is a core tenet of his design philosophy (Norman, 2012; Norman, 2012b): My field is Human-Centered Design: making products that people can use, that fit their needs, that excite them and are enjoyable. The United States leads the world in human-centered design.

E Governance Research Paper

E Governance Research Paper E-governance means electronic governance. It is application of Information Technology in government functioning in order to have good and smart governance. Smart here refers to Simple, Moral, Accountable, Responsive and Transparent. This involves using information and communication technology by government agencies to have transparent dealings with different users. Thereare many reasons for which e governance is required. Some of them are as follows: (a) Information exchange with citizens, businesses or other government departments (b) Speedy way of doing work (c) Time and cost saving (d) Efficient delivery of public services (e) Improving internal controls (f) Increasing revenue (g) Re-structuring of administrative processes (h) Providing quality services Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has provided means for faster and better communication, quality services, efficient storage, effective work, processing of data and exchange and utilization of information to its users. It helps in providing better controls and increasing revenue. All individuals, groups, businesses, organizations or governments are benefited by the advantages of ICT. It is a faster, more accurate and simpler means of word-processing and is now being used as a tool for tabulating data which finally helps in decision making. With increasing awareness of using computers and internet many users are benefited and they are motivated to modify their ways of doing things in order to en-cash the advantages provided by ICT.This has led to re-engineering of business processes. The process of re-engineering helps in faster and better processing of information and thus a better decision making, greater reach and better utilization of resources .This helps in having overall good governance. In the case of citizens, it provides enhanced access to information and government agencies, efficient service delivery and transparency in dealings and also acts as an information tool to the government. With the increasing awareness among citizens about their rights their expectation has totally changed .Today they expect government agencies to be transparent in their dealings, accountable for its activities and faster in its responses. For this use of ICT helps in achieving good governance. The technologies used helps in achieving a wide range of objectives. There is equitableand faster development with a wider reach. Today Ethics in Governance, with the help of tools of modern technology such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) should be used to transform the relationship of the government with its employees, citizens and businesses, and also between its own agencies. It has been recognised that e-Governance is the logical step with the use of ICT in systems of governance in order to ensure wider participation and deeper involvement of citizens, institutions, civil society groups and the private sector in the decision making process of governance. REQUISITES OF E GOVERNANCE For effective e governance the foremost requirement is that workplace has to be fully computerized.Computer is the mostImportant requirement for e governance.Computers should be connected so that online work is possible. There has to be some online work flow procedure. Government employees should be trained so that they can work on the software. The training is required so that they become user friendly with the software. Services should be fully accessible. It also insist in removing the paper based system and making everything computerized to increase the transparency of work and a speedy flow of work is possible. TYPES OF INTERACTIONS IN E GOVERNANCE G2G (Government to Government) In this case, there is interaction within government agencies to improve the efficiency and overall output. The interaction can be within a government organisation or between two government organisations. Information and Communications Technology helps not only to restructure the governmental processes involved in the functioning of government entities but also aids in increasing the flow of information and services within and between different entities. The interactions can be either vertical or horizontal. Horizontal i.e. between different government agencies as well as between different functional areas within an organisation and vertical i.e. between national, provincial and local government agencies .There is also interactions between different levels within an organisation. The primary objective of G2G is to increase efficiency, performance and output. May be horizontal or vertical Functioning of government agencies Increase in efficiency Improved performance Efficient output G2C (Government to Citizens) In this case, there is an interaction between government and citizen. A common platform is created between the government and citizens which enables the citizens to benefit from large range of public services. This provides the availability and accessibility of public services on the one hand and improves the quality of services on the other. Here is a two way communication model in which there are direct interactions between government and citizens involving transparent dealings between the parties. It gives citizens the choice of when to interact with thegovernment (e.g. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week), from where to interact with the government (e.g. service centre, unattended kiosk or from ones home/workplace) and how to interact with the government (e.g. through internet, fax, telephone, email, face-to-face, etc). The primary purpose is to make government, citizen-friendly. Acts as an interface between govt. and consumer Expands accessibility to public services Makes the government citizen friendly Ensure transparent dealings Examples of G2C Transactions: Online paying of bills Filing of FIR Licensing and registration Procurement and Bidding Tax and fee payments Citizen help desk Public Information network Search property assessment values Property tax payments Information about political processes and services E seva Exemplifies democracy Increased citizen participation Passport queries G2B (Government to Business) In this model there is interaction between government agency and business organisations. E-Governance tools are used to help the business community providers of goods and services interact with the government. The objective is to cut red tapism, save time, reduce operational costs, increase revenues and to create a more transparent business environment when dealing with the government. The G2Binitiatives can be transactional, such as in licensing, permits, procurement and revenue collection. Trade, tourism and investment opportunities can be effectively handled with e governance . These measures help to provide a suitable environment to businesses and thus enable them to perform more efficiently. E governance used to aid business community Saves time Reduces cost Transparent transaction deals Increase revenue Example: 1. Payment of taxes by business houses 2. Tender applications are transparent If any business house has applied for a brand name it can also be monitored online and status can easily be known. There can be transparent dealings in all tenders and different government works. G2E (Government to Employees) In this model there is an interaction between government organisation and employees. Employees can interact with the government in regular basis. The interaction can even be vertical where the employees can give feedback at the assurance of their name held anonymous. Today through e governance they can also have a look at their TDS and pay roll status. E governance provides them with a common platform to remove their queries and thus giving an effective performance. This interaction is a two-way process between the organisation and the employee. Use of ICT tools helps in making these interactions fast and efficient on the one hand and increase satisfaction levels of employees on the other. Facilitate government and employee communication Fast and Efficient Increases satisfaction of employees Synergy in work output Removal of bias Implementation of e governance in India Indian government has taken many initiatives in the field of IT for the desired implementation of e governance in India. The plan popularly known as the E governance action plan correctly portrays the long term growth action plan for India. Its successful implementation was seen during the period of 2003-2007. It provided both the citizen centric and the business centric governance all together at the local, state and the national level. It was a good kick start an many flaws were seen thereto such as suitable system for quickly motivating the states needs to be improved, a single window for providing services to the citizens should be implemented, whether and whenever possible outsourcing of services should be implemented for quicker growth perspectives, more efforts were required to stabilize and increase the public private partnerships, improved connectivity was required. Such flaws were thoroughly noted and improved thereon. Apart from the 2003-2007 action plans, many other plans were successfully implemented. Some were: Implementation of Information Technology Act, 2000 .It helped in providing the legal framework for all the electronic transactions. The act came into force on 17 October, 2000. National Taskforce for Information Technology and Software development was established in the year 1998. Centre for E governance was created for successful linkage of the local, state and he national level and so that efficient help could be made disposable at all ends. e office was established so that offices , ministries , departments and authorities could be electronically connected. HPC i.e. the High Powered Committee was created with the cabinet secretary made its head for the successful implementation of e governance. A Joint Secretary level Officer as the IT manager was appointed in every Ministry and Department. Websites for all Ministries and Authorities was developed for the wide coverage and availability of E governance. One can surely say that E governance has been successfully implemented in India. A lot more needs to be achieved in this respective area. Majority of the states are implementing E governance in their working. They are making a collaborative effort in shifting from the manual working model to the electronic working model. It can be inferred that more of the planned implementation of IT is what the need of the hour. More of powerful, efficient, quicker strategies may be drawn for a powerful implementation of E governance. Success of E governance in India India as a country is majorly built on Bureaucratic structures which are built in rationale principles and therefore is definitely failing ti cope up with the present scenario. Therefore a shift from such traditional practices to the complete new electronic world was definitely requires. E governance plays the major role for the implementation of such paradigm shift toward the module of E governance which itself holds as one of the major reasons for its success. Now we have single window operations, more simplified procedures, a better office and record management, less corruption, better job and position handling. The service delivery mechanisms have considerably improved. We need not stand in long queues now, there is less of procedural complexities and the personnel working has considerably improved and has become more transparent. The reason behind such success is the successful implementation of the Information and the Communication Technology. The citizen has become more aware now. He is no longer a puppet in the hands of the government employees and has got a full right to question any kind of discrepancy. E governance is surely a success. A transparent government with a satisfied consumer is what E governance is responsible to produce. E governance in India has definitely given us such results to see which is a step ahead for a developing country like India. Major E-Governance Projects in India 1. End Users/Beneficiaries: Jaipur Police Officials State where Implemented: Rajasthan HOW THE NATIONAL CAPITAL DELHI CAN BE BENEFITTED FROM E-GOVERNANCE As the various projects that have been studied above in the research paper have been implemented in different parts of our country successfully ; its very much required that such efficiency in implementing the projects should be shown in our national capital i.e. Delhi. Around the time clock , such projects have shown efficiency in the working system of the particular area , laws have been better maintained , efficient property assessments have been procured , reduction in corruption have been noticed , lesser time wastage and a fairer and a transparent government has been achieved. From the above study we can observe that such regulations should be proceeded with the Delhi region as well. Firstly to start with as far as the stamp papers are concerned , the common problem that one faces is the unavailability of the required denomination by the buyer. Due to such problems they have to buy higher denomination stamp papers and therefore a common citizen faces trouble. Therefore if such stamps are made available online , e governance would prove helpful and reduce a common citizens problems. Secondly, if e governance is successfully implemented in the delhi region people and the government can come into contact with each other at a single point. Hence no time wastage on a citizens part and no resources wastage on the part of the government would prove advantageous. Commonly a citizen needs to be in contact with the government as regards the issue of birth certificate, death certificate, and other legal documents that a citizen would commonly reqire at his very own disposal. It is the duty of the government to make his citizens available to all such requirements. Therefore, if e governance is successfully implemented in delhi region , such issues can be easily solved. Thirdly, if e governance is successfully implemented in Delhi , the long licensing and application procedures can be simplified to a great extent. The procurer can fill the forms and the desired information online with just the authentication procedure to be done physically. This will reduce a lot of problems faced both by the citizen and the government. Fourthly, e governance implementation in Delhi and around the regions can make the payment of taxes , allotment of identities , collection of payments and funds and various other financial transactions very transparent and accurate. Peoples legal issues , transparency , faire government , better access to information , change for the working module of new culture can all be easily maintained. With the successful implementation ICT penetrators , lack of trained human resources and very large geographical distances can be easily resolved. Essay --

â€Å"The Holocaust is not a tragedy of the Jewish people, it is a failure of humanity as a whole†(Moshe Katsav). During the time of the Holocaust over six million people were killed, most people overlook the children’s fraction of those deaths. Over one million five thousand Jewish children, gypsy children, and handicapped children were killed. Only a small percent of children survived the holocaust. The children who survived the Holocaust had to experience life in hiding, life in concentration camps, and life in the ghettos. There were quite a few children that went into hiding during the holocaust. Some of the children hid by fleeing to another country or getting false identities. Some of the children that hid were searched for, and fairly often found others had a better chance of survival depending on the what they knew. If a child was too young to know when to be quiet then they had a greater chance of being found than older children who knew when to be quiet. Children who were hidden in rural areas were hidden in barns, chicken coops, and forest huts. Children who were hidden in suburb areas were hidden in attics, cellars, behind walls, and in or behind cabinets. Some had to sit/stand motionless for hours at a time (â€Å"Jewish Victims of the Holocaust†, â€Å"Hidden Children†). Too much noise would alert neighbors and cause suspicion. Another way of survival was fleeing to another country. Britain started relocating Jewish children under the age of seventeen, this was called the Kinde rtransport. This began in December 1938 and ended September 1, 1939, two days before Britain entered World War II (Fitzgerald, Stephanie). During this time over ten thousand children traveled of Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Some children had ... ...d to catch the Nazi’s eyes. Nazis would go to these peoples houses and tell them that their family member was getting the latest treatment, or maybe even a cure. This was in fact not true, they were being sent to Auschwitz to be experimented on, most of these children never returned home (projetaladin.org). The Holocaust was a dreadful time in history. Over six million jews were murdered, over one and a half million being children. The children during this time had to experience life in hiding, life in concentration camps, or life in the ghetto. Some children had to experience all three. The Jews are an example to people all across the world today, since the Holocaust happened we know not to repeat it. â€Å"If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example† (Anne Frank).

Are Professional Athletes and Actors Overpaid Essay

In this essay I will explore a much debated topic in this country pertaining to the undeniable fact that professional actors and athletes overwhelmingly get paid much higher than the average American. As any highly debated topic, there are always arguments and viewpoints from both sides of the spectrum. Like many Americans, for entertainment I thoroughly enjoy watching both film and professional sporting events. Even though, I have always maintained a firm stance that many in these professions are simply overpaid. I believe once you have read my research and analysis on this topic, you as well will agree from a sociological, economical and even ethical perspective that they are grossly overpaid. Proponents of the film industry or â€Å"Hollywood† and the pro-sporting industry would contend that they are simply providing for a demand. These two industries do provide for Americans some of the most enjoyed and popular forms of entertainment in our society today. These industries not only provide earnings to the actors and athletes but also provide jobs to many other Americans as well. Like any successful industry, those who provide the primary service to that industry will in turn be rewarded appropriately for their contributions to its success. Both actors and pro-athletes would argue that attaining their current level of success was not easy as these jobs are very competitive. Also, there are many times huge expectations to perform and stress that come with the job and the celebrity status. Some pro-athletes such as football players, would also argue that after they retire, their physical condition has declined much earlier in life due to years of physical trauma and injury and performing in other jobs post-career is many times difficult.  As I wrote earlier, there are arguments from both sides of the spectrum. Let’s begin to analyze from the other viewpoint not ignoring the other side’s arguments and include some of the fundamental and sociological reasons of our need and demand for entertainment. Looking back to the era of the â€Å"Roaring 20’s† in which America was enjoying a period of sustained economic prosperity, the average American could at a higher level afford to enjoy  different forms of entertainment than previously. This ushered in a new era and cultural dynamic which emphasized organized sports, theatre, and f ilm. Since this era, America has seen economic depression, recession and crisis, but has still remained the wealthiest country in the world. Due to this, the entertainment culture that was created roughly 100 years ago still exists today, and the demand for it continues to grow. Each year more and new gaming devices, games, videos, movies, and television shows are released. Likewise the costs of these products and devices continues to go up. The unfortunate side to this is that it has created a more sedentary lifestyle and culture of everyday America, and in turn attributing to issues as obesity amongst both children and adults. Regardless, we have developed and created this culture with the associated increased demand for this form of entertainment, and the industry is nothing more than happy to oblige us in providing it. In a study conducted by USA TODAY and Statista of top paid Hollywood actors, it found that Robert Downey Jr. earned over $75 million in a one year timeframe from June 2012-June 2013. Much of his earnings were a result of his roles in both â€Å"The Avengers† and â€Å"Ironman 3,† with â₠¬Å"The Avengers† alone grossing $1.51 billion in box office sales making it the highest grossing movie of 2012 worldwide. Liam Neeson who was ranked as the 10th top earner, grossed over $32 million in the same timeframe. According to the Daily News, Samuel L. Jackson is titled with being the highest grossing actor of all time with earnings of $7.42 billion throughout his film career. Floyd Mayweather Jr. who is a pro-boxer has earned a total of $90 million in 2013 from winnings alone, making him the top pro-athlete earner according to Sports Illustrated. Mayweather has achieved such a high status that it is common for him to have a guaranteed win-or-lose purse of around 30 million per fight. Pro-basketball player Lebron James who is at number two in the rankings, earned over $17 million in salary and a staggering $39 million in endorsements alone for 2013. The list goes on and on with astronomical numbers that get higher and higher each year in passing. There is essentially a fundamental question that is raised in regards to all of this, â€Å"What individual is simply worth that much?† The services provided by these individuals is simply for entertainment alone. What is provided  does not contribute to the functionality or betterment of our society. There was a time when acting or professional sports were a second job in which an individual would perform due to their love for the sport or art. After all, a sport is something that is played for enjoyment by the rest of us because it is enjoyable. They get paid millions while the rest of us do it for fun. Being the die-hard Green Bay Packer fan that I am, I scream and yell and root for my team as hard as or harder than the other fans. When my team loses or Aaron Rodgers has a bad game I can find myself feeling down and upset. Some fans feel as if their whole day or week is ruined if their favorite team loses. I think it is they that always have the last laugh. At the end of the day he or she is disappointed but regardless they’re still making millions. When Mayweather has a bad fight, he still takes home his $30 million. In a way we are all pawns in their game, and we are always the losers. As we look at wealth distribution in the U.S., many of these actors and athletes fall into the wealthiest 10% of Americans. According to James M. Henslin in Essentials of Sociology, 70% of our nation’s wealth is owned by this top 10%. To break this down even more, the top one percent owns 1/3 of all U.S. assets. The average per capita income in the U.S. is only $42,000 per year (194). The other 90% who is the fan base that provides the majority of the income of these actors and athletes, are seeing this income gap continue to widen. Even with the recent recession in our economy, the rich as a whole statistically remain unaffected. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The strong middle class that once was the backbone of our economy is slowly diminishing and sliding to the left. This middle class are the firefighters, police officers, and service members who protect and serve our communities and country. They are the structure of society who provide strength and functio nality and who ultimately serve to the betterment of us all. There is much debate on how wealth should be distributed. A capitalist society has proven for the U.S. to be effective and be partially credited with building the foundation of all of the wealth and creating the richest country in the world. Completely socialist societies have proven in history to be a failure. Typically there is a Darwin Effect of â€Å"Survival of the Fittest† which dominates. There obviously  needs to be some middle ground here, but finding a solution is difficult. In this case of actors and athletes, I believe us as the consumer and their supporters have the power to control this huge inequality and disparity by saying, â€Å"Enough is enough!† and demand that some rationale come into play. Paying these individuals this much money is simply ridiculous in my opinion. Fundamentally we as a society should give value to those professions which serve us in a way that promotes a more sustainable society. Works Cited Fortunate 50: Sports Illustrated 13 Apr 2014. Essay Sample on Cocaine Addiction of Pregnant Women

Essay Sample on Cocaine Addiction of Pregnant Women It is found from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that approximately 45,000 pregnant women were using cocaine in 1992.   Cocaine exerts several threats to unborn babies. Different kinds of health problems are observed among babies that were exposed to cocaine. These health problems range from minor to major life-threatening problems although the earlier predictions have not come true that were about the damage of the brain of cocaine-exposed babies. Unborn Baby and Threat to Its Health Due To Cocaine There are different ways in which the health of a pregnant woman and an unborn baby can be affected due to the use of cocaine during pregnancy.   Miscarriage is the biggest expected threat during the early months of pregnancy.   Premature labor can occur if cocaine is used in the later months of pregnancy.   An unborn may also suffer from a stroke or it may die. A stroke then may result in irreversible damage of brain. Premature birth occurs most likely as a result of cocaine use during pregnancy.   Cocaine-exposed babies usually have a low birth-weight. Most of the time, the head of such babies are smaller and their brains are small to in ratio with their body size. It is found from studies (Kuczkowski, 2003; Plessinger Woods, 1998; Vidaeff Mastrobattista, 2003) that women who use cocaine during pregnancy usually have a premature baby at least twice as compared to other women who do not take cocaine or any other drug during pregnancy. The size of the baby can be very small at the time of birth because oxygen and nutrients cannot be flown to the fetus due to cocaine. The heads of the cocaine-exposed babies are usually very small and thus their brain is very small too. These problems are most commonly found among women who do not quit the use of cocaine throughout their pregnancy whereas such problems are less commonly found among women who stop using cocaine as soon as they conceive the baby or in the first trimester. It is also found that the placenta becomes pulled away and does not remain on the wall of the uterus before the beginning of labor when cocaine is used during pregnancy. This condition is called placental abruption and it is very harmful for both mother and baby because this can lead to fatal condition. Moreover, other complications become enhanced during labor and delivery of the baby. Cocaine Use during Pregnancy and Physiological Effects and Complications Several obstetric complications may arise to the health of fetus and mother when cocaine is used during pregnancy. Women who use cocaine in their pregnancies are found to have less weight gain and they also suffer from different cardiac complications such as hypertension, cardiac ischemia, arrhythmia and hemorrhagic stroke (Kuczkowski, 2003; Plessinger Woods, 1998; Vidaeff Mastrobattista, 2003). If a pregnant woman is already suffering from cardiovascular problems then cocaine acts as an additive to increase the complications. (Wagner, Katikaneni, Cox, Ryan, 1998). Certain cardiovascular events such as seizures and stroke are significantly found among pregnant who use cocaine during pregnancy. This is due to the increase in the toxic nature of cocaine during pregnancy. (Plessinger Woods, 1998). Pregnant women using cocaine are also found to suffer greatly from uterine rupture, placental abruption, hepatic rupture and maternal death (Kuczkowski, 2003; Plessinger Woods, 1998). There are several physiological effects of cocaine such as hypertension, tachycardia and vasoconstriction. These effects may also be found in cocaine-exposed fetus. When women take cocaine, vasoconstriction of the maternal uterine blood vessels takes place so supply of nutrients and oxygen do not reach to the fetus properly because these blood vessels are primarily responsible to supply nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. As a result, fetal hypoxemia and uteroplacental insufficiency occur (Woods, Plessinger, Clark, 1987). Several complications such as premature labor and delivery, fetal intracranial hemorrhage, spontaneous abortion and abruptio placentae may take place due to vasoconstriction. (Cohen, Green, Crombleholme, 1991; Fajemirokun-Odudeyi Lindow, 2004; Plessinger Woods, 1998; Wootton Miller, 1994). Physiologic Effects of Cocaine Exposure during Pregnancy in Neonates There are certain physiologic effects of cocaine exposure in neonates. The molecular weight of cocaine is low and the nature of cocaine is both lipophilic and hydrophilic. Due to these properties, cocaine can easily cross the placenta and makes its way to the blood brain barrier. Cocaine is metabolized in fetus very slowly as compared to its metabolism in adult. So cocaine gets maximum time to remain in fetus. (Schenker et al., 1993; Wagner et al., 1998). Mahone and colleagues (1994) performed a study on a similar topic and found that cocaine and its compounds not only fetus by the process of diffusion to the placental vessels and umbilical cord but they are also diffused in the amniotic fluid from where the fetus swallow them. Several studies have found the effect of prenatal expose to cocaine in infants in the form of variations in intrauterine growth such as varied length, birth weight and head circumference and other effects such as prematurity. Several studies have observed the association between prematurity and IUGR of the newborn and the use of cocaine by mother.   Studies have shown that as fetus is exposed to cocaine, the newborn suffers from low birth weight, less birth length and small head circumference and this rate is increasing rapidly. The rate of premature birth is also increasing among cocaine exposed newborns despite the use of  different (Bada et al., 2002; Chiriboga, Brust, Bateman, Hauser, 1999; Richardson, Hamel, Goldschmidt, Day, 1999; Singer et al., 2002). several other studies have not found any signification relationship among lower birth weight, less birth length, small head circumference and premature birth (Bandstra et al., 2001; Bateman Chiriboga, 2000; Eyler, Behnke, Conlon, Woods, Wobie, 1998). Singer and colleagues (2002) performed a study to find out the neonatal exposure to cocaine on its length, birth weight, head circumference and premature birth. In their study, 218 infants were observed who had been exposed to cocaine in their neonatal life and 197 infants were observed who were not exposed to cocaine, then the researchers found out that when cocaine was used during pregnancy, an increase in premature labor and delivery occurred with low birth weight, less birth length, small head circumference and shorter gestational age.   Similarly, Bandstra et al. (2001) also performed a similar study and found that low birth weight and less birth length are found to be associated with material cocaine use but no effect on head circumference was found. Bandstra et al. (2001) performed a similar study and found that material cocaine use does not have effect on premature delivery because all the infants in their study were full-term. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) A small number of studies have shown the relationship among the neonatal exposure to cocaine and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A significant increased risk of SIDS was found to have strong relationship with maternal substance abuse in a study of 1760 cases where other confounding variables were kept controlled. Those variable included teenage mother, maternal cigarette smoking, black race and birth weight (Kandall, Gaines, Habel, Davidson, Jessop, 1993). Fares, McCulloch, and Raju (1997) performed a research on 10 previously published studies and found out that there is no association of SIDS with cocaine but SIDS is observed by prenatal exposure to illicit drugs in general. Klonoff-Cohen and Lam-Kruglicks (2001) also performed a study to find out any such relation and they found that there is no relationship between the maternal use of cocaine or any other illicit drug and SIDS. It can be concluded from this literature research that there is a relationship between the prenatal exposure to cocaine and small head circumference, low birth weight, less birth length and shorter gestational age. Technology Dependence Essay Example

Technology Dependence Essay Example Technology Dependence Essay Technology Dependence Essay 26 April 2012 Technology Dependence I was fourteen years old when I received my first cell phone. It was Just your normal indestructible flip phone. It lasted me for about two and a half years even though it had a lot of wear and tear and didnt look the prettiest it still worked and I had no complaints. On my current phone I can access my email, watch movies, and download music all with Just a touch of a button and instantly its there on the screen. Its crazy how in Just five short years I went from having a phone that I could only make phone calls on to basically having my own portable computer and entertainment center on my phone. As you can see our society today knows their way around all the new technology, but yet the majority of them could not imagine what life would be like without it. In our society today parents are buying cell phones for their kids at younger and younger ages. More and more kids are becoming addicted to the latest gaming systems and couldnt imagine going an entire day without some type of technology fix. This is causing kids to not want to play outside and be active because they rather play on the latest phone, pad, Oxbow, or WI. Information technology has reached the mint where you can open up your computer or switch on your phone and talk to whomever you choose, know exactly where your friends are or what they are up to and find out what something means all with a mere click of a mouse (newness. Mom). Its crazy how much we take the technology we have today for granted. Kids these days dont understand how their parents and their grandparents and so on could have made it through a day without having a constant technology fix. Even worse they dont even realize that cell phones are actually apart of the recent technology in our society. The first cellular phone was invented in 1973, which really isnt that long ago. If you think about it ou r grandparents were in their thirties or so, and my own parents were only in their teens. Now looking at todays society compared to when it first came out almost every person you interact with has a cell phone and they always have it on them and some would even say they feel naked when they dont have their cell phone with them. More broadly, cell phones and computers have transformed life. They let people escape their cubicles and work anywhere. They shrink distances and handle countless mundane tasks, freeing up time for more exciting pursuits (anytime. Com). With all the new technology we have today you can figure out what anyone is doing within a matter of seconds without even calling them. With all the social networking sites now showing where people are when they post stuff you can Just look at someones backbone wall and figure out what city they are in or look at a tweet and figure out what street they were on when they posted it. Yet all the new technology isnt completely ruining our society as a whole, there are some good aspects that come out of it that actually benefit our society. Imaging studies show the brains of internet users become more efficient at finding information. And players of some video games develop better visual activity (anytime. Mom). Yet it doesnt help our some good in our young society today. But the extent that our young society is attached to these isnt helping as much as it really is hurting them in the long run. With all the smartness on the market today that have Gaps built into them its almost a necessity for experienced drivers to have for road trips or Just finding their way around new places all in the palm of your hand for a much c heaper price than a TOMATO, and it does so much more than Just tell you directions as you already know. Its sad to see what our society today is becoming with all the new and addictive technology we are being exposed to. People are now starting to crave fixes of technology and wouldnt even begin to imagine a day without any sort of fix, yet Just a decade ago most of it was nonexistent and we take it all for granted. In an article by Matt Richter, Attached to Technology and Paying a Price, Richer describes a young businessman in his late twenties and his addiction to technology, Even after he unplugs, he craves the stimulation he gets from his electronic gadgets. He forgets things like dinner plans and he has trouble focusing on his family. Our society today is starting to miss out on all the interpersonal connections and communication skills that we had a decade ago. We are basically starting to take all our new advances in technology for granted and arent realizing how much it is hurting us. If you sit back and think about it you dont really hear much about people actually sitting down together and having so called family time or at least a family dinner with no television on in the background or cell phones out. We are that addicted that we couldnt imagine turning our cells phones on silent mode and leaving them in a efferent room and have what used to be a normal family dinner with Just everybody sitting down, conversing and having a technology free dinner for once. As teenagers they cant imagine doing any of this. When parents get mad and tell them to put their phone away all they do is ignore them and either hide that they are doing it or Just roll their eyes and keep on typing away. Our young society knows their way around all the latest technology, which in some cases can be very beneficial but for the most part its Just killing all the communication and personal skills they grew up learning before being introduced to such thing as technology. Now if you look at all the new toys coming out for you kids to infants there is some type of electronic device incorporated into it somewhere. Just think back a few years and the big craze was how television was the major media that was affecting the young societys academics and attention span. But according to Daniel Anderson, professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Multitasking using ubiquitous, interactive and highly stimulating computers and phones, appears to have a more powerful effect than TV. (anytime. Com) Its crazy to think that when parents were all concerned about the mount of television their kids were watching was affecting the brain to not even thinking about all the effects the new technology we have today is affecting the overall young societys brains on a daily basis. Im doing Backbone, Youth, having a conversion or two with a friend, listening to music at the same time. Im doing a million things at once, like a lot of people my age. Sometimes Ill say: I need to stop this and do my schoolwork, but I cant. After reading a quote from a kid who is in our young society today. What is it going to take to get people to realize it? Also will e be able to realize it before its too late to change anything? In 2008, people consumed three times as much information each day as they did in 1960 (anytime. Com). Just think 2008 was Just four short years ago and look how much our technology has advanced in those four short years. If you compare today to 1960 Im sure its a whole lot more than Just three times. We are losing intimacy with the natural world outside of all the new technology that we are being introduced to daily and becoming more addicted than ever. Im so addicted to this device that I stopped mid-bite to rush to send this message (WebMD. Com). Many young adults and even adults are actually guilty of doing this at least once and most do it daily. Mostly teens are guilty of this but they are not the only ones. Many young business men and women are guilty of having their blackberry glued to their hand and check it every ten seconds for what they think is the most important email of their life when they should be enjoying a nice lunch catching up with a close friend from college that is in visiting for the weekend. But instead we completely ignore the fact that they are sitting across the table from you and you end up ruining what should be a great time. According to Alan Eaton, Latin teacher at Woodside High School in California, Its a catastrophe, technology has led to a balkanization of their focus and duration of stamina, and the schools make the problem worse when they adopt the technology (anytime. Com). Now not all technology in schools is horrible like Eaton says it is but to the extent of what school systems are starting to incorporate is becoming more distracting for them to find ways to get on Backbone and Youth even if the websites a supposedly blocked. With the kids in our society today that grew up with all the latest technology they now their way around little road blocks like blocking certain web pages while they are at school. So instead of doing interactive math problems on the latest Macho they are instead playing with the WebMD and posting all the pictures online. Teachers, Administrators, and other school officials really think that bringing in the latest technology is helping students stay focused and learn more efficiently because of how this young society has been brought up. The advances in technology have gotten so bad that, Private information is now very easily obtained one can simply Google someone and instantly have his or her tactics appear on the screen (newness. Com). Just think millions of so called bored teenagers surfing the web and goggling random subjects and people on a daily basis have access to find out person qualities and some sites will even list what city and state you live in. Now most sites you have to pay to get more detailed information about yourself but its scary to know that if someone is willing to pay they could find out your exact address and possibly stalk you or even try and steal your identity with what information is out on the web for them to access about you. Technology advances nowadays is actually becoming a little bit scary because you just dont know what sites to trust in case somehow you get a virus from an ad that popped up or you accidental had a typo in the website you were going to and you ended up getting infected with a virus. Which in todays technology viruses are no longer restricted to computers but you can get them on your Macho, pad, phone, technology dependent society that we are, and are currently still building, would kill everyone because they wouldnt know what to do if they didnt have access to everything they supposedly need twenty-four/ seven, in the palm of our hand. Some of the bigger harms of the easy access to technology is giving kids more and more ways to bully others. Bullying used to be strictly in person, both verbal and physical. But nowadays kids are becoming more and more confident behind a computer screen in the comfort of their own home to say whatever they want to say and be tougher than they really are. Rather than in the past majority of kids wouldnt even think about bullying others because of consequences but with all the technology advances kids are Just becoming way to confident with a technology airier between them and the victim. Slanderous information sent out into cyberspace is difficult, if not impossible, to expunge. Cyber-bullying often takes the form of cyber gossip, where damaging content is based on whim; not facts, and is posted on social networking sites (Cameron. Org). Whats even worse is that nothing is being done to stop this and as our technology advances more every day, this is Just going to get worse. Schools systems act like they are trying to take care of the problem if it happens in one of their schools but in all reality they say they cant ally do anything because it is all on the internet and not happening directly on school grounds that they know of. So what is our technology dependent world coming too? Are we really Just going to lets things like cyber bullying, and hackers and viruses take over everything in our lives and end up ruining everything that we have worked hard for, for years before all of this evil technology was even invented. If we dont do something about changing some of our dependence on the technology we will end up having everything in our lives controlled by technology.

Compare non agricultural plant management strategies with farming Essay

Compare non agricultural plant management strategies with farming - Essay Example It was estimated that more than two million years, until the end of the Mesolithic period, this occupation continued. Hunter-gatherer social group was the most common one seen during this period. A hunter-gatherer society used to involve in the direct procurement of edible plants and animals from the wild, used to involve in foraging. They also had the habit of hunting and had no interest in domestication. However there was a transition from their phase into the subsequent Neolithic period with the advent of nascent agricultural practices. The domestication was also common practice in the later human groups. It was reported that agriculture began as early as 12000 years ago and it was practiced in almost all the countries of the world. The initial references were available with Asia and Middle East. As it was mentioned in the introductory address that energy is the basis of life, one has to give a serious thought on the various aspects of energy that necessitates the comparison of agricultural plant management with non agricultural energy options. Let us analyse the differences that exist between Hunter-gatherers and Modern farming human groups. The hunter gatherers were hard working human group who used to strive hard for hunting and needed more energy levels and hence they used to consume high energy. When agriculture has become prevalent, modern farming groups used to encourage domestication of animals which in turn helped the agriculture. The agricultural crops, being major food producing crops serve as a major energy suppliers. For example, rice and wheat supply enormous amount of energy in major parts of the world. In some countries, potato and sweet potato along with maize and soyabean supply the required energy levels to different groups of the people. At the same time, agricultural crops face several challenges like the reduction in cultivable area and
